As the host of the Bankruptcy Podcast, I opened this episode by emphasizing the importance of having health insurance to avoid potential financial catastrophe. I shared two personal stories that highlighted the risks of forgoing health coverage.
The first story was about a friend who worked in construction without insurance. When he faced a relatively minor $15,000 medical bill, he could pay it off without filing bankruptcy since the costs weren’t too extreme. This served as a wake-up call, and he got insured after that.
However, the second story took a more dire turn. I recounted meeting a man with around $150,000 in home equity but no health insurance. After suffering a heart attack with costs potentially reaching $300,000, he had no way to affordably pay off that debt through bankruptcy. His only options were begging the hospital for mercy, refinancing and paying over a long period, or selling his home.
I strongly urged listeners to get insured, even if their job doesn’t provide coverage. I recommended exploring healthcare.gov, despite the hassle, to find an affordable catastrophic plan that could prevent bankruptcy from a major medical event.
While monthly premiums are an expense nobody wants, I stressed that having any coverage is infinitely better than risking complete financial ruin. I advised enlisting tech-savvy younger relatives to assist with the healthcare.gov process if needed.
Ultimately, my aim was to impart the harsh realities I’ve witnessed when lack of health insurance collides with unpredictable medical emergencies. Getting insured, even at an individual level, is an investment in protecting your financial future.
